Margaret Cooke

Principal and Co-Founder

Margaret is a licensed architect and co-founder of Practice, a creative architecture, design, and development company based in Tampa. A native Floridian, Margaret grew up in Tallahassee and graduated Summa cum Laude with a Bachelor of Design in Architecture from the University of Florida. She spent her pinultimate undergraduate semester studying at the Vicenza Institute of Architecture. Her academic dedication and talent was quickly recognized, and she was offered the Samfox School's Full-Tuition Scholarship to attend the Masters of Architecture program at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. During her graduate studies, she was selected for the School's Research Travel Grant to participate in studies at Delft University in the Netherlands. Upon graduation with her Masters of Architecture in 2010, Margaret was awarded the AIA Henry Adams Certificate - one of the faculty voted top graduate awards.

After school, Margaret moved to New York City and worked for several architecture firms, most notably, the award-winning firm Ennead Architects where she worked on a variety of institutional projects including the Kimmel Pavilion at NYU Langone Medical Center as well as the expansion of the Eero Saarinen-designed School of Music, Theatre & Dance at the University of Michigan. During her time at Ennead, Margaret questioned the traditional practice of architecture and began to explore how she could expand her role in other successful business models such as that of the architect as developer. Following her time at Ennead, she joined the most notable architect led development company, Alloy Development, where she worked on the design, development, marketing and sales of several projects. While at Alloy, she acted as Project Architect on the firm’s first Florida project, an 18 unit, luxury waterfront condo development. She also led Alloy in the transition to using Revit as the office standard for drawings and documentation.

Her time in New York City had a fundamental effect on her thinking about architecture, development and urbanism and afforded her the opportunity to work with an incredible group of people on a variety of project types and scales. After years spent working for some of the best architecture and development firms in the country, Margaret and her husband, an architect and developer, came home to Florida to realize their long-standing goal of starting their own Practice, of which Margaret now runs independently. Practice weaves together architecture, design and real estate to create meaningful work that positively contributes to the built environment. Margaret believes she has a responsibility to make good things and endeavors to leave behind things of lasting value.
